Verkade, a Dutch chocolate maker, is located in Zaandam, and was originally founded in 1886 by Ericus Verkade. Originally a bread and rusk company, it expanded to chocolate, cookies and other sweets. Success came to Verkade through its marketing efforts in 1906. At that time the company issued picture cards that were collected and put into albums. Before World War II many Dutch people were entranced with collecting the cards and collector albums swelled. The company then became widely known in The Netherlands.
Considered a Fair trade company, Verkade chocolate makes one type named Cafe Noir. It also has a product called Mini Mix, which contains dark, white, and milk chocolate with hazelnuts in small squares. Another product is cooking chocolate in a bar that melts easily and can be used for dipping strawberries or pouring on ice cream.
